Gifted and Talented: Addressing Special Needs

Our society has come to recognize and support children with various handicaps - hearing or visual impairment, learning disability and behavior disorders. Recognition, however, has not been demonstrated for the needs of children identified as gifted and talented. This workshop addresses the unique needs of this population.

Topics:

Three contemporary definitions of giftedness and the importance of developing a school philosophy, policies and procedures regarding how to best meet the needs of these students

To identify multiple areas of giftedness and how to assess these unique talents in children

How to use resource and personnel to address the needs of gifted and talented children in schools

Renzuilli's "Revolving Door" model

Ways of avoiding boredom and underachievement by modifying the curriculum to provide appropriate challenge
