Using Portfolios to Improve Student Thinking, Motivation, and Responsibility

Learning portfolios have become an integral part of authentic assessment. The use of learning portfolios focuses upon learning and formative evaluation through frequent feedback. Grading is de-emphasized since evaluation is ongoing. Participants in this workshop will learn how a portfolio can be used to assess student thinking.

Topics:

Introducing portfolios to students

Different uses of portfolios and how portfolios are maintained

Decision-making strategies that continue to place more responsibility upon students regarding their own portfolio development

Use of portfolios for individual conferences and goal setting

Use of portfolios for parent conferences to communicate the student's academic progress, growth and development
