Theories related to critical periods in brain development and left and right hemispheric functions will be reviewed. The workshop presenter will identify the important qualities of a brain-compatible learning environment.

This workshop will challenge many of the assumptions upon which current educational practices are based and will offer suggestions and recommendations for school reform that will benefit all students.

Topics:

Four basic theories of brain development and organization

Distinguishing between surface knowledge and natural knowledge

Major factors which cause the brain to become less efficient

Modifying curriculum, instruction and evaluation to improve mental performance

Applying basic principles of motivation as they relate to brain-compatible learning and teaching
