Dancing to Intergrated Rhythms: A Model for Active Academics

Rhythm, movement and music are fundamental elements of life. Yet these areas of development are often ignored within schools or, at best, relegated to isolated classes for children once or twice a week.

This workshop will demonstrate how rhythm, movement and music can be integrated into academic subjects to teach and reinforce facts, skills and concepts.

You will have an opportunity to engage in movement experiences designed to acknowledge and awaken the kinesthetic/aesthetic learning of all students. Experience strategies designed to create a more balanced approach to learning ensuring that all learners are given the opportunity to be creators of knowledge. This workshop is grounded in a commitment to curricular integration - the honoring of different learning styles and multiple intelligences.

Topics:

The basic elements of rhythm and how to apply these elements to enhance auditory and visual memory and learning

Strategies for using rhythm, movement, and music in every classroom throughout the elementary school

Ways to use rhythm and music to teach math facts and concepts and enhance language development

Sample lesson plans for integrating rhythm, movement and music with science, health and nutrition

Dances of various cultures which can easily be integrated into social studies and multi-cultural education
